During an appearance on Fox News’ “Hannity” Wednesday night, House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) implied that the House Select Committee on Benghazi was created with the purpose of defeating Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton in the race for the White House.

When asked by MSNBC host Mika Brzezinski to respond to Mr. McCarthy's remarks, Republican presidential candidate Jeb Bush (R-Fla.) shared his disbelief:

“The Benghazi Committee exists because there should be an analysis of what actually happened, and what the response was, and if there was a cover-up afterwards,” he said.

“This isn’t to try to damage Hillary Clinton,” Bush argued, “and I don’t quite understand why he said that.”

The former Florida governor went on to criticize Washington for spending time bragging about their initiatives as opposed to actually doing something “positive” for the American people:

“That’s the problem with Washington right now. They’re grasping to find something to say that they’ve done something positive. Well first of all, that isn’t positive. And secondly, that’s not the intent. You tell Trey Gowdy that. He’s been busting his hump here to try to come up with a fair hearing to get to the truth.”
