At the Cannes Film Festival Saturday, actress Jane Fonda claimed that an orderly “mindset" expressed by white men is the true basis for climate change.

“There would be no climate crisis if there was no patriarchy. A mindset that sees things in a hierarchical way - you know, white men are the things that really matter and everything else, with nature at the bottom, sacrificed,” said Fonda.

“You can take anything – racism, sexism, misogyny, homophobia, whatever, the war – if you really get into it and study it, and learn about it and the history of it, everything’s connected.”

it's not the first time Fonda has blamed white men for everything wrong with the world - she'd delivered the exact same line nearly word-for-word on the Kelly Clarkson show last week.

Except that humanity’s impact on the climate has nothing to do with racism, sexism, or the male gender. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) reports, “Human influence on the climate system is clear. This is evident from the increasing greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere, positive radiative forcing, observed warming, and understanding of the climate system.”

In addition, a changing climate doesn’t necessarily mean undeniable danger for humanity. Former President Obama’s own Undersecretary for Science Steve Koonin admitted that climate change isn't solely based on people, stating back in 2021, “Projecting future climate is excruciatingly difficult. Yes, there are human influences, but the climate is complex. Anyone who says that climate models are ‘just physics’ either doesn’t understand them or is being deliberately misleading.”

Koonin also dispelled the myth of fossil fuel reduction as the ultimate resolution.

“Not only is this impractical–we get over 80% of the world’s energy from fossil fuels–it’s not scientifically possible….In other words, it takes centuries for the excess carbon dioxide to vanish from the atmosphere," he said. "So, any partial reductions in CO2 emissions would only slow the increase in human influences–not prevent it, let alone reverse it.”

But not only was Fonda mistaken about the causes of climate change, she was also mistaken in the solution. Later in her remarks, she stated, “We’ve got about seven, eight years to cut ourselves in half of what we use of fossil fuels," suggesting that those “who run the fossil fuel industry” “should all be tried for crimes against humanity and nature.”

While Fonda may believe she has good intentions, her remarks here are far more dangerous than the any way the Earth's "climate" may be changing – simply because these remarks are completely unfounded. Those with such a large platform should actively hold themselves accountable and evaluate their beliefs before speaking at a film festival about an entirely unrelated issue.
