Interpol, the International Criminal Police Organization made up of 194 member countries who share access to data on crimes and criminals, rejected Iran’s arrest warrant for President Trump in a statement to CNBC Monday evening.
“Under Article 3 of INTERPOL’s constitution ‘it is strictly forbidden for the Organization to undertake any intervention or activities of a political, military, religious or racial character,” the statement said, adding that the Interpol will not consider requests of that nature.
The move comes after Iran issued an arrest warrant for President Donald Trump on Monday for the death of Iranian General Qassem Soleimani, who was killed by a U.S. drone strike earlier this year.
“36 individuals who have been involved or ordered the assassination of Hajj Qassem, including the military and political officials of the U.S. and other governments, have been identified and arrest warrants have been issued for them via the Interpol,” said Prosecutor-General of Tehran Ali Alqasi Mehr according to Fars News Agency.
The arrest warrants issued Monday said the individuals are being accused of murder and terrorist action including President Trump, who will be prosecuted as soon as he steps down as president, according to CNN.
Soleimani was killed by a targeted U.S. drone strike at Baghdad’s international airport in January for “actively developing plans to attack American diplomats and service members in Iraq and throughout the region” said the Department of Defense.
Solemiani was a top general and Iran’s leader of the elite Quds Force. He is also the alleged architect of Tehran’s proxy wars in the Middle East.
