Once upon a time the Hip-Hop/Rap genre of music saw artists rap about social issues and the plight of the communities that the specific rapper lived in. Much like society, hip-hop devolved into being about…well not very much at all except what it’s like to live life like the wealthy. Thanks to the independent scene, hip-hop pertaining to real issues has seen a resurgence in the last few years with lyricists like Adam Calhoun and Tom MacDonald.

Speaking of MacDonald, he released a new song and video last week calling out those who label everyone for everything they do while also being offended by thoughts that might not be their own.

The song, aptly titled “Snowflakes,” sticks up for people who still love the U.S. but might be discouraged from voicing said love for fear of being “cancelled.”

“…we’re all the same, we are red, white, and blue,” MacDonald says in the song before turning his attention to “Snowflakes.” “Ashamed to be American? Okay, that’s cool. ‘Cause honestly, we are all ashamed of you too.”

Here’s the video:

MacDonald has been releasing hit after hit over the last few years, especially when he dropped the single “WHITEBOY” in 2018, a song that calls out the double standard that every race of people can be outwardly proud of said race unless you’re white.

The 32-year-old Canadian rapper acknowledges the complaints and criticisms of other people, no matter what they believe, but regularly calls out the hypocrisy of the clear double standard that permeates society.

MacDonald is also known for recent hits, such as “Straight White Male,” “Coronavirus,” “People So Stupid” and “NO LIVES MATTER.”

While rappers like MacDonald and Calhoun's lyrics might not be for everyone and are occasionally coarse and abrasive, the fact remains that one of the ways to change the prevailing societal narratives and bring back the open exchange of ideas is to affect culture by questioning it in the art we consume.
