Reports of assaults against border agents are up nearly 50 percent over last year, skyrocketing from 486 in FY2016 to a stunning 720 in FY2017, according to U.S. Customs and Border Patrol.

Those totals don’t even count the month of September, which has yet to be reported.

In fact, the number of assaults against border agents in FY2017 hit a record high over at least the last six years. In FY2014, for example, only 373 assaults against border agents were reported.

While assaults against border agents by illegal aliens are nothing new – occurring at a rate of roughly two per day – the trend manages to crawl onto national news headlines on the relatively rare occasion when such an incident proves fatal.

On Sunday, immigration officials reported that a border agent had died and another was injured while responding to “activity” at the border. CBP has yet to release many details about the incident, but confirmed to the Washington Post that Rogelio Martinez and his partner were not shot.

A local border union rep said he guessed the pair was attacked with rocks, a common weapon used against border agents by illegal migrants and drug smugglers.

The trend is far from just disturbing. While the number of illegal aliens attempting to cross the U.S. border unlawfully dropped like a rock after President Donald Trump’s inauguration in January, that number’s been on the rise – though still trending below historic levels – for the last several months. This year alone, more than 280,000 illegal aliens have crossed into the United States from Mexico.

While that’s still significantly lower than the 408,000 or so that crossed in FY2016, the steady influx indicates a porous border that’s still unsecured and undermanned.
