Rapper Ice Cube defended himself on social media Wednesday after fans condemned him for appearing in a photo with a presidential candidate.

Robert F. Kennedy Jr., a presidential candidate running for the Democratic nomination in 2024, posted a photo with the rapper on July 10, saying that he had enjoyed talking with the cultural figure.

“.@Dennis_Kucinich and I spent a wonderful evening with one of our country’s most influential and outspoken civil rights leaders @icecube!” his tweet read.

Kennedy’s post sparked backlash among fans of Ice Cube who disagree with the candidate’s platform. Some took to social media to voice their disappointment with the rapper and accusing him of endorsing Kennedy. Ice Cube denied those allegations and reminded his followers that “a picture is not an endorsement, dummy,” in a post to his Twitter account. His tweet sparked a number of responses accusing the rapper of “selling out” and “disappointing” fans with his political views.

“My brotha ice cube, I’ve been listening to you since 1993 you went from arrest the president, fuk the police, straight outta Compton, the list goes on,” one user replied to his post. “I’m highly disappointed in you brotha, what’s your mission? Because of you I still rep the West pls tell me your not selling out.”

“Bro, every time you pose in a picture with a politician, they are using that as an endorsement. You were just in a picture with Kennedy. Whether you come out and say it or not, a picture is worth a thousand words. These folks are allow (sic) about opticals, you should know that,” another user said.

Ice Cube replied to many of the people making accusations against him, posting tweets defending himself and saying that he hadn’t endorsed anyone.

“Sellout? I work for myself. I’m self-made,” one of his Tweets read. He reminded another user that he hadn’t endorsed anyone, saying “the devil is a liar and so are you.”

While some of Ice Cube’s responses were in defense of himself and his views, many of his replies were more comical in nature. One user posted a gif of someone laughing, with the caption “He called you a civil rights leader,” referencing Kennedy’s caption. Ice Cube responded simply “You should’ve hear (sic) what he called yo Momma,” followed by several laughing emojis.

Another fan said he was praying for Ice Cube concerning the “s–t ton of leftist hate coming at (him),” to which Ice Cube replied “Pray for them.”

Not all of the social media responses were negative, though. Ice Cube received support from fellow rapper Chuck D, who praised Ice Cube as an individualist in the music scene.

“Know this fact. @icecube has gone into every one of these ‘industries’ many of the masses worship… on HIS own rule and as his OWN MAN. A game that’s twisted many into demise. Not him. Know that. Seen the same dude since the day I met him. He KNOWS who he is. Know who YOU are,” Chuck D posted.

This most recent social media attention comes on the heels of Ice Cube’s “F–k the Gatekeepers Podcast Tour,” where the rapper has appeared on different podcasts to try to shed light on the alleged efforts of the NBA to hinder the rapper’s own basketball league, BIG3. He kicked off the tour with an appearance on The Joe Rogan Experience podcast and later appeared on Bill Maher’s podcast, Club Random.
