"Drag Queen Story Hour" is a very strange event, and if anyone disagrees with that then they are a very strange person. Agreed?

Now, what can make "Drag Queen Story Hour" even worse than it already is? You hire a child sex offender to read to children.

That’s exactly what happened at a library in Houston, Texas, last September. The Houston Public Library neglected to do the required background checks for the controversial event and admitted Tatiana Mala Nina — better known as 32-year-old child sex offender Alberto Garza —  to entertain young, vulnerable children.

Garza was convicted of molesting an eight-year-old boy in 2008, according to KHOU

“In our review of our process and of this participant, we discovered that we failed to complete a background check as required by our own guidelines,” the library said in a statement. “We deeply regret this oversight and the concern this may cause our customers. We realize this is a serious matter.”

Mass Resistance, a conservative group looking to put an end to the unneeded program, held a press conference on Friday calling for more than the library's manufactured apology.

“If they [the library] had done their job and due diligence, if they had said wait...maybe it’s not a good idea to have a sex offender who at 200 pounds and 5-foot-11 assaulted an 8-year-old boy!” Tracy Shannon of Mass Resistance said. “Most parents would not allow that individual to sit in this library, sashay in, and be held up as a role model to our children.”

Fortunately, there were no reports of any children being assaulted by Garza at the library, but when you remember this “drag queen” knows he’s a child sex offender, you have to question what the heck he was doing there.

The library is literally required to do background checks by their “own guidelines,” and if they can’t do that, then there’s no reason for them to hold strange events with strange people speaking to normal children. In fact, I’d say there’s no reason to hold this “story hour” at all.
