The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) will be deploying federal units specialized in crowd and riot control to respond to possible threats of vandalism throughout Independence Day weekend.

Rapid Development Teams (RDTs) will be dispatched to Seattle, Portland, and Washington, D.C. to protect federal properties and facilities.

“I think what we’ve seen is this lawlessness over the past four weeks in a variety of communities and the President, the administration is taking really strong action,” Chad Wolf, Acting Secretary of the DHS told Fox and Friends, referring to potential threats of vandalism over Independence Day weekend.

“We want to make sure that federal properties, federal facilities, buildings, statues, monuments that the DHS protects [...] have the personnel there and ready,” Secretary Wolf added.

“We want to make sure the people who work in those buildings are protected as well.”

This announcement comes after the Trump administration’s increased efforts to crack down on disruptive activity across the nation. Earlier this week, the President signed an executive order establishing a penalty of up to 10 years in prison for vandalizing government property.

Secretary Wolf also said that the Department of Justice has already arrested almost 100 of the violent protesters and that four individuals have been tried in federal court for attempting to tear down a statue.

“We’re not going to let these individuals who clearly hate this country continue to terrorize and go after the destruction of federal property, federal monuments. We’re here to stop them,” Secretary Wolf concluded.
