The NHL has a diversity problem. The game just isn’t welcoming enough to people who can’t ice skate. Okay, that’s not really it. That wouldn’t be nearly as stupid as the actual “problem.”
According to the AP, the league has learned to its horror that it’s staffed mostly by white people. Yep. Some 84% of NHL employees suffer from melanin deprivation, compared to just 4% Asian and 4% black. (God bless the 2.48% who preferred not to answer.) Even worse, 62% are dudes. Hockey also has too many people named “Gordo,” but the AP didn’t mention that.

Naturally, this is something that needs fixing. And Kim Davis, the NHL’s executive vice president of social impact, growth and legislative affairs is just the diversity drone to do it. In announcing the spine-chilling results of the survey, she said the numbers provided a “a fact-based baseline so that you can begin to develop very intentional and specific strategies around where you need to hire, how you need to hire, how you need to improve your brand.”

Glad to know this is old fashioned cynical corporate whoring and not a sincere effort to stamp out free association and self sorting. The effect is the same, but everybody understands the profit motive.
