A student was kicked out of her high school history class for wearing a National Rifle Association (NRA) shirt, CBS Sacramento reports.

Two sophomore girls were wearing NRA shirts in class when one was sent to the principal’s office — and the other lectured by her teacher.

“She was basically being attacked in class,” said the student’s mother, Charlene Craig. “[The teacher] basically yelled at her, telling her that she would be writing an essay if she disagreed with him.”

The other student was sent to the principal's office for refusing to take off her NRA shirt. The apparent reasoning was the school apparel code, which states that students cannot wear apparel that portrays weapons. However, the student’s NRA shirt had no weapons on it.

The Lodi Unified School District acknowledged the school’s mistake in an official statement, writing, “The school administration reviewed the t-shirt in question and determined that it did not violate school dress code policy.”

The school district vowed to clarify the apparel policy with their staff in order to prevent future confusion.
