Texas Sen. Ted Cruz’s (R) wife Heidi reportedly compared her husband’s presidential campaign to the battle to end slavery during a conference call with supporters on Tuesday.
On the phone with the Cruz campaign’s National Prayer Team, Heidi Cruz attempted to lift supporters’ spirits by saying that the “long battle” is not over despite her husband suspending his presidential campaign.
She said that Mr. Cruz’s efforts to change the Republican Party will take “a lot longer than four years,” just like it took abolitionists a long time to defeat slavery.
"Be full of faith and so full of joy that this team was chosen to fight a long battle," Heidi Cruz said, as transcribed by Texas Tribune reporter Patrick Svitek.. "Think that slavery – it took 25 years to defeat slavery. That is a lot longer than four years… We're going to keep moving forward."

"It was our first national race, but we have changed the Republican Party by Ted being in the Senate and by him running," she said. "This party is now being deceived, but the old battles are behind us, the new ones are before us."
Heidi added that her husband has "an enormous agenda in the Senate" as he returns to his job as Texas senator on Capitol Hill.
Sen. Ted Cruz dropped out of the race for the White House last Tuesday after losing to Donald Trump in Indiana.
He said in an interview with Glenn Beck that he is open to restarting his campaign if he happens to win Nebraska’s GOP primary on Tuesday or if "a viable path" to the nomination presents itself.
"[But] I am not holding my breath," said Cruz.
