Rep. Eric Swalwell D-CA), who prominently hosted a ‘Trump-Russia Whiteboard’ video series and made many tv appearances pushing the Trump/Russia hoax, is now being called on to step down from office. The calls coming after a report this week about his connections to a suspected Chinese spy.
“Not only should he be removed from the Intel (committee), he should be removed from congress, as well,” House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) told Fox News.
Axios broke the story this week that a suspected Chinese intelligence operative developed extensive ties with local and national politicians, through campaign fundraising, extensive networking, personal charisma, and romantic or sexual relationships.
Among those Chinese national Christine Fang, or Fang Fang was in contact with was Swalwell.
- Fang took part in fundraising activity for Swalwell’s 2014 re-election campaign, according to a Bay Area political operative and a current U.S. intelligence official. Swalwell’s office was directly aware of these activities on its behalf, the political operative said. That same political operative, who witnessed Fang fundraising on Swalwell's behalf, found no evidence of illegal contributions.
- Federal Election Commission records don’t indicate Fang herself made donations, which are prohibited from foreign nationals.
- Fang helped place at least one intern in Swalwell's office, according to those same two people, and interacted with Swalwell at multiple events over the course of several years.
A statement from Swalwell's office provided to Axios said: 'Rep. Swalwell, long ago, provided information about this person — whom he met more than eight years ago, and whom he hasn’t seen in nearly six years — to the FBI. To protect information that might be classified, he will not participate in your story.'
McCarthy said, “Remember what Swalwell said - he accused the president of everything that he did. By lying to the American public and sitting on the Intel committee. Not only should he be removed from the Intel, he should be removed from congress as well."
“This is only the tip of the iceberg because remember what we’re hearing, these are Chinese spies that go down to the level of a mayor, they court and help a city councilmember become a congressman, this congressman now gets on the Intel Committee,” McCarthy told Fox News. “They are only selected for the Intel Committee by the leaders of their party, meaning Nancy Pelosi. Nancy Pelosi is one of the Gang of Eight, along with myself.”
