Hard-Hitting Journalism: Reporter Presses Psaki on White House Cat

Libby | June 4, 2021

A Yahoo reporter asked White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki for an “update” on the White House cat on Thursday.

This softball of a question comes after it was suggested the Biden family may be adopting a cat.

Yahoo News Correspondent Brittany Shepherd gleefully asked, "Any update on the White House cat?”

“Is that something that's still happening here?" she continued. "Our readers are asking us a lot.”

Psaki joked that she has no major updates.

“Although maybe it might be true, that we're waiting for a bad news day for that to come out," Psaki responded. "If you see a tail wagging coming out of the briefing room, you'll know something bad is about to happen."

White House reporters have been subject to criticism for similar easy questions in the past, rather than grilling the Press Secretary with important political questions.

The press’ softballs extend past the briefing room and Psaki, as President Biden himself was recently asked about his ice cream preference.

According to the New York Post, a reporter grilled Biden last Thursday, asking the president the tough questions.

“Mr. President, what did you order?" according to the New York Post.

To this tough question Biden responded, “chocolate chocolate chip,” in which the crowd erupted, fawning over his response.

The press, avoiding difficult questions, would clearly much rather inquire on elementary issues including ice cream and now, the White House cat.
