A good guy with a gun stopped a school shooter Tuesday, ending what could have been a deadly massacre similar to last month’s shooting in Parkland, Florida.

NBC reports that a student pulled out a gun and shot two other students, a girl and a boy, at Great Mills High School in St. Mary's County, Md., just before 8 a.m. on Tuesday before he was shot by an armed school resource officer.

The female victim was reportedly still in critical condition as of noon EST. The male victim is in stable condition, while the shooter, also a male, has reportedly died.

“The shooter exchanged fire with a school resource officer, who is a trained, armed deputy sheriff,” NBC reported.

Tuesday’s incident comes amid a national debate over arming teachers and supplying schools with armed security guards to respond to threats such as school shooters.
