A recently expelled student of an Illinois high school was shot and wounded by a school resource officer on Wednesday morning after exchanging gunfire with him.

WQAD reports, that the 19-year old suspect fired several shots near the Dixon High School gym, where seniors were gathered for a graduation walk-through.

Dixon Police Chief Steve Howell says the school resource officer rushed to the scene and exchanged fire with the suspect.

The suspect’s injuries are not life threatening.

No students or school staff were injured in the incident.

“I can not be more proud of the police officer and the way he responded to the situation. With shots ringing out through the hallways of the school, he ran towards the suspect and confronted him head on. Because of his heroic actions countless lives were saved. We are forever indebted to him for his service and his bravery,” Chief Howell said.
