A manhunt is underway after a California police officer was fatally shot during a routine traffic stop on Wednesday.

Fox News reports,

The Stanislaus County Sheriff's Department said in a news release that Newman Police Officer Ronil Singh, 33, was shot and killed during a traffic stop just before 1 a.m. on Wednesday.

Singh reported initiating a traffic stop shortly before 1 a.m. in Newman, located about 80 miles east of San Jose, police said.

A few minutes after responding, he called out ‘shots fired’ over the radio.

Multiple agencies responded to the scene, where Singh was found at the scene with gunshot wounds. The suspect had already fled the scene before additional officers arrived.

He was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Pictures shared by California Highway Patrol (CHP) show the unidentified suspect wearing jeans, a black zip-up hoodie with an Ecko logo on the sleeve, and a silver chain around his neck.

CHP describes the suspect as Hispanic and warns that he is “considered armed and dangerous and may be in possession of a firearm,” according to CNN.

Surveillance captured him leaving the scene in a silver or gray extended-cab Dodge Ram 1500 pickup truck.

CHP just announced that the vehicle had been located, though the suspected cop killer "is still outstanding."

Newman Police Chief Randy Richardson in the Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Department’s press release said that “our Newman Police family is devastated by the loss of Ronil.”

He asked that anyone who has information contact authorities “immediately so we can get this cop-killer off the streets.”

According to the press release, “Officer Singh was a native of Fiji and has been employed by Newman Police Department since July 2011.” He was a corporal.

The incident draws a deadly year for law enforcement near a close:

“Since the start of 2018, at least 87 law enforcement officers across the U.S. have died while on duty — with at least 45 of those deaths caused by gunfire,” according to Fox News.
