New German Rule to Close Door to Dual Citizens Who Join Terrorist Organizations, Specifically ISIS

I’ll never understand the sheer gall of people who plead with their home country to allow them back in after joining a terrorist organization only to realize after some time has passed that terrorist life wasn’t everything they’d hoped it would be. One European country is taking a stand against such an absurdity, and it might surprise you.

Germany — yes, Germany — has passed a new law that would strip “adult German nationals with dual citizenship, who take part in future battles for any terrorist ‘militia’” of their German citizenship.

According to German outlet Deutsche Welle (DW):

The new law would apply to jihadis who are of age, have a second nationality and take part in future battles as part of IS. It would not apply to IS fighters who are currently imprisoned.

Germany's Nationality Act already includes a similar rule for dual nationals who join "the armed forces or a comparable armed unit" of another country without the permission of the German Defense Ministry.

The new legislation would expand the Nationality Act to apply to someone who "takes part in combat operations abroad for a terrorist militia," which is defined as an "armed paramilitary organization" that violates international law in order to "establish a new state or state structures.”

I don’t see anything wrong with that law, do you? This new rule would essentially prohibit dual citizens who join terrorist organizations from ever being allowed to return to the country they turned their back on — in this case, Germany.

It is the height of ego and entitlement to think that someone could basically commit treason against their country, in the form of leaving said country to join a terrorist organization, to then think that the country they left would accept them back if they show some level of contrition.

Sorry! The answer is still no.

The new German rule was passed just weeks after Hoda Muthana, the “American-born woman who traveled to Syria to join the Islamic State [ISIS],” said she wanted to come back to the U.S. now that ISIS has basically been driven out of Syria. Both President Donald Trump and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said Muthana won’t be readmitted to the U.S.

But, Muthana said she was “deeply sorry!”

Still don’t care. Bye, Felicia!
