A recent Gallup poll finds that an overwhelming majority of Americans (69 percent) view big government as “the biggest threat to the country in the future.”

While the percentage is down from a record high of 72 percent in 2013 following the rollout of Obamacare, the sentiment remains strong.

Gallup reports,

“The 69% choosing big government is down slightly from a high of 72% in 2013, the last time Gallup asked the question, but is still one of the highest percentages choosing big government in Gallup's 50-year trend…

“This comes at a time when Americans name the government as one of the three most important problems facing the country and when 75% of Americans perceive widespread corruption in the government.

[…]

“Half of Americans say the federal government poses an immediate threat to rights and freedoms, and Congress' job approval continues to languish -- perhaps explaining why so many see big government as the biggest threat to the country.”

Most Republicans (88 percent) say big government is the biggest threat to the future of the United States, far exceeding Independents (67 percent) and Democrats (53 percent).

Even so, a majority of Democrats agree.

More Democrats (41 percent) than both Independents (25 percent) and Republicans (7 percent) combined view big business as the biggest threat, Gallup finds.
