The socialist mayor of a town in northern France is threatening to quit after far-right National Front leader Marine Le Pen won a plurality of votes in his town during the first round of France’s election over the weekend.

The Daily Mail reports Daniel Delomez, the mayor of Annezin, told local newspaper L’Avenir de l’Artois that he didn’t want to “devote [his] life to assholes” after Le Pen won 38 percent of vote in the area.

He reportedly said, “It is catastrophic. It's possible that I will step down as I do not want to dedicate my life to assholes.”

Far-left candidate Jean-Luc Melenchon received only 19.25 percent of the vote in the town, just ahead of current front-runner Emmanuel Macron, who received 17.29 percent of the vote.

With 97 percent of the vote in, Macron won 23.86 percent of the total vote, while Le Pen won 21.43 percent of the vote in the first round of the French presidential election. Macron and Le Pen are advancing to the second round of voting to decide the president.
