Former ABC Anchor: Stephanopoulos Isn't a Journalist, Clinton Donations Not an 'Honest Mistake'

On CNN Sunday morning, former ABC anchor Carole Simpson criticized George Stephanopoulos for his undeniable “coziness” with the Clintons and his failure to "separate himself from his political background to become a journalist."

“There’s a coziness that George cannot escape…” Simpson said. “He was press secretary for President Clinton. That’s pretty close.”

“And while he did try to separate himself from his political background to become a journalist, he really is not a journalist,” she fired.

“Yet ABC has made him the face of ABC News, the chief anchor. And I think they’re really caught in a quandary here,” Simpson said.

She told CNN that ABC must be fuming at Stephanopoulos right now for the bad publicity his thousands of dollars in donations to the Clinton Foundation are causing the network.

“While ABC said this was an ‘honest mistake,' they don’t feel that way,” Simpson said.

“Secretly, they are hopping mad I am sure, because the worst thing that could happen to a network and to its celebrities is to have bad publicity.”

“We don’t know what is going on and what they’re telling him…” she added. “But George may be in some hot water with ABC.”

Whether Stephanopoulos will be allowed to cover the 2016 presidential election given his association with the Clintons appears highly unlikely at this juncture.
