Democratic presidential candidate Jim Webb denounced his fellow Democrats for using “white working males” as a “whipping post” and then calling them “racist” during an interview in January.

In January, Webb spoke to Yahoo! News’ Matt Bai about the reason why Democrats are not winning the white, male vote and how Webb believes he can bring those voters back.

Webb said, “I think this is where Democrats screw up, you know. I think that they have kind of used—unwittingly used—this group, ‘white working males,’ as a whipping post for a lot of their policies. And then when they react, they say they’re being racist.”

“I think that they’re inclusive cultures. They’re dignity-driven cultures. They’re honor-driven cultures. They have gravitated towards the Republicans on these emotional issues because at least they see that there, they will have some respect and response, political response.”

“Why can’t you bring these people back? That’s what I was saying eight years ago. And there is a theory, and it began pretty much in ’08, after I was elected in ’06, that ‘Okay, we don’t need these people. We’ll put a map up, and we’ll get to 270 electoral votes, and if they don’t like it, tough.’  But that’s not how you build harmony in this country and we need harmony in this country more than at any point that I can ever remember.”
