Actress Angelina Jolie has claimed her children of color have been “endangered” by the American healthcare system due to systemic racial disparities.

In an op-ed published for the American Journal of Nursing on July 5, Jolie explained that when it comes to treating abuse cases, hospitals are structurally working against people of color.

“Medical research, imagery, and training continue to center on white skin, not on how injuries present differently in patients with darker skin tone,” she wrote. “As a result, medical professionals—including nurses and forensic examiners—often miss injuries depending on race and ethnicity.”

Jolie then continued on to explain that this includes her children.

“As the mother of children of multiple races, I have seen my children of color be misdiagnosed, at times in ways that endangered their health,” the op-ed read.

Obviously, we don’t know exactly what conditions Jolie is referencing that her children have allegedly experienced, but there are numerous factors that come into play in a diagnosis. It’s doubtful that the sole reason her children have experienced a misdiagnosis was because of their skin color.

In the article, Jolie does recall one of her personal experiences with her daughter of color from Ethiopia.

Reflecting personally, when my daughter Zahara, who is from Ethiopia, was hospitalized for a medical procedure, the nurse told me to call her ‘if she turns pink near her incisions. I stood looking blankly at her, not sure she understood what was wrong with what she had said. When she left the room, I had a talk with my daughter, both of us knowing that we would have to look for signs of infection based on our own knowledge, not what the nurse had said, despite her undoubted good intentions.

Besides claiming her children have been endangered by American healthcare because it’s so racist, Jolie also explained how lighting in hospitals works against people of color. She advocated that there needs to be technological advancements in what types of lighting hospitals use in order to provide better care for people of color because it is harder to detect bruises on darker skin.

“Bruising is one of the most common types of soft tissue injury experienced by abuse survivors," she wrote. "Yet even today, bruise detection and diagnosis are usually done by sight in natural light. This fails to take account of injuries to abuse survivors of color, which may be barely visible or entirely invisible to the naked eye...”

Jolie added that even though her family has been privileged enough to have “access to high-quality medical care, simple diagnoses are missed because of race and continued prioritization of white skin in medicine.”

“From technology to improving diversity and representation in medical research and training, it is past time to embrace new solutions," Jolie wrote, concluding her display of attention seeking victimhood.

Despite America having arguably the best healthcare system in the entire world – people from all over the world will travel just to give or receive care here - according to Angelina Jolie, it’s apparently so racist that it’s endangering people of color.
