The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) has released a new report showing a 12% increase in homelessness from 2022.

The agency’s “Point-in-Time (PIT) count is the highest number of people reported experiencing homelessness on a single night since reporting began in 2007.”

The report found more than 650,000 people were experiencing homelessness on a single night in January 2023 – that’s 20 out of every 10,000 people in the U.S.

According to the study, 4 out of 10 people experiencing homelessness identified as “Black, African American, or African.”

Hispanic homelessness saw the largest numerical increase, spiking 28% over last year.
