As Christmastime approaches, news reaches us of homeowners defending their families from break-ins.

A Florida homeowner grabbed his gun and shot an intruder in the leg Tuesday night. The suspect was held at gunpoint until police arrived, according to officials.

The Lake Wales homeowner woke up to the sound of his dog barking, armed himself, and ended up discovering the intruder inside the home holding some of his child's belongings.

After shooting 34-year-old Cameron McGuire in the leg, the homeowner held McGuire at gunpoint until police arrived.

Fox 13 Tampa Bay reports:

Lake Wales Police Chief Chris Velasquez says this incident is an example of a law-abiding citizen exercising his legal rights.

"This homeowner is a law-abiding citizen and had every right to protect his family," said Velasquez. "Cameron McGuire should be thankful today that he is alive and in jail. Hopefully, this was his wake-up call".

McGuire has been charged with burglary of an occupied dwelling and theft.

A wake-up call was not answered by a man who allegedly broke into a New Mexico home over the weekend. A homeowner shot a man dead after he allegedly broke into a house.

Investigators said 45-year-old Lucas Moore, of La Luz, broke into a home and tried striking the homeowner.

KOB 4 reports:

The homeowner’s wife and their three small children were at home at the time of the incident. None of them were injured. The children were reportedly asleep in their rooms and didn’t see the incident.

No charges have been filed against the homeowner.
