Dick Durbin was first elected to Congress 44 years ago. That was 1982. “Thriller” by Michael Jackson was released in late November of the same year.
Now the 80-year-old leftist Senator has decided it’s time ‘beat it’ – announcing on social media Wednesday that he will not seek re-election in 2026.
The decision of whether to run for re-election has not been easy. I truly love the job of being a United States Senator.

But in my heart, I know it’s time to pass the torch.
So, I am announcing today that I will not be seeking re-election at the end of my term. pic.twitter.com/eiBTPjToFT
"The decision of whether to run for re-election has not been easy,” Durbin said in an online video. “I truly love the job of being a United States Senator. But in my heart, I know it’s time to pass the torch. So, I am announcing today that I will not be seeking re-election at the end of my term."

Many social media users are being critical of Durbins’ long stay in Congress, where he has been a consistent leftie. Govtrack’s 2024 report card on Congress lists him as the Senate’s 14th most liberal member.
Just last month, Durbin railed against the ‘Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act’ that aimed to keep biological men out of women’s athletics.
Durbin was first elected to the U.S. House in 1982 and served seven terms before becoming a member of the Senate in 1996.
