During the annual MTV European Music Awards show, hip-hop icon Eminem had a busy night between performing his newly released rap ballad 'Walk on Water' and receiving the award for Best Hip-Hop.

While Eminem's performance went as well as he may have guessed, the rapper was admittedly confused about receiving the award for Best Hip-Hop, coming in over several other more prominent working artists in that genre.

"I'm not really sure how I got this, because I haven't had an album out in a few years," the rapper said in his acceptance speech.

While most media outlets overlooked Slim's statement, the remark did bring up a serious question of, why did he win? Of course. Until very recently, he has been out of the public's eye, as well as the spotlight.

Well, there may be an answer to that: his recent attacks on Donald Trump.

Eminem recently dished out an awkwardly timed (as well as awkwardly performed) freestyle that came down hard on Donald Trump. While he is not the first celebrity to jump in the ring against the president, the way and the time seemed a little less than genuine for some fans of the icon.

In the video, which premiered at the BET awards, Eminem laid out a series of insults that ranged from calling the president a "racist grandpa" to a "b---h" In addition, the rapper had a message to some of his fans that may support Trump:

"And any fan of mine who's a supporter of his, I'm drawing in the sand a line, you're either for or against, and if you can't decide who you like more and you're split on who you should stand beside, I'll do it for it for you with this. F--- you."

The piece wasn't entirely selfless, though. It turns out the freestyle came as Eminem is building up hype for his eighth studio release.

Fast forward to the MTV European Music Awards show. It's true that even Eminem seemed surprised that he had won the award -- but in an era where you can go from a corporate stooge that set up bailouts for the bank your husband held stock in to becoming a folk hero leading the "resistance" against Donald Trump (We're looking at you, Maxine Waters), it seems that Eminem's anti-Trumpness might've had more to do with his win than his actual hip-hop contributions.
