Driver Charged for Putting Seatbelt on a Case of Beer Instead of Several Children

A traffic patrol on Australia’s Great Northern Highway found a 27-year-old man driving a vehicle that had three children, including a baby less than a year old, lying unrestrained in the laps of adults or in the car’s footwells while cartons of beer were restrained in car seats. 

Apparently, this is nothing new to Kimberley District Superintendent Allan Adam, who told ABC the incident didn’t surprise him.

"We do have problems up here in the Kimberley," he said. “We are doing our best to stamp it out through enforcement but we are also about to embark on public education, which is obviously needed in remote communities.”

Adam said his district has had a growing concern about the number of people driving on suspended licenses and failing to restrain themselves or their passengers in the vehicle.

"And unfortunately on a large number of occasions those passengers are kids,” Adam added.
