The Deputy Chair of the Democratic National Committee, Minnesota Rep. Keith Ellison, shared a photo on Wednesday promoting a book about antifa, the self-proclaimed anti-fascist organization responsible for violent protests across the country.

In his tweet, Ellison can be seen holding a book titled “ANTIFA: The Anti-Fascist Handbook” by Mark Bray, a former Occupy Wall Street organizer. Ellison joked the book “that strikes fear in the heart of [Donald Trump]:”

Antifa activists were instrumental in the violence in Washington, DC during President Trump’s inauguration. They have also perpetuated violence at many events, including notable ones protesting conservative speakers in the Berkeley area.

In fact, one of the founders of Smash Racism DC, an antifa-affiliated group, believes violence is at the core antifa’s philosophy.

Rationalizing violence, Smash Racism DC founder Mike Isaacson told The Hill, “The justification [of the use of violence] is that Nazi ideology at its very core is founded on violence and on wielding power by any means.”

Isaacson also made it clear he does not believe people he deems Nazis should be allowed to freely assembly.

“There is the question of whether these people should feel safe organizing as Nazis in public, and I don’t think they should,” he explained.

Bray, the author of the book Ellison was holding, told The Hill antifa claims their violence is self-defense against “the inherent danger of fascists organizing.”

He said, “The argument is that it needs to be stopped immediately, because if you let it grow, that poses a danger to society.”

Ellison’s tweet was met with cheers from many antifa supporters:

Some, however, thought the tweet was ill-conceived:
