This week, the Democratic National Committee will consider a resolution urging Sens. Angus King (I-Maine) and Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) to run as Democrats in 2018.
The resolution, drafted by California DNC member Bob Mulholland stated, "Therefore, be it resolved, that the DNC recognizes the important contributions of the independent Senators from Maine and Vermont to causes at the heart of the Democratic party’s mission and urge them to run as Democrats."
The move comes as a rather bold move to gain the favor of the popular Independent congressmen, especially in the case of Sanders.
In July of last year, Bernie Sanders called the DNC email leak suggesting a bias against his presidential campaign "outrageous," and as a result of public outcry and blowback within the party, former DNC Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz stepped down in disgrace.
In fact, a class action lawsuit was filed against the DNC for rigging the primary, but the presiding judge found that the DNC was well within its rights to prop up the candidate they wanted to win.
The Hill's Ben Kamisar reported that the DNC's new push to gain Sanders' favor was "indicative of the unease of some of the party leadership over Sanders’s decision to not identify as a Democrat despite his leadership role within the party.
Well, that's one way to look at it.
Another way suggests that the DNC, in a desperate attempt to win more votes, recognizes how popular Bernie Sanders is and wants to use him to gain his followers for the 2018 midterm elections.
One thing is certain, it will be interesting to see how Sanders responds, should the resolution go through.
