DePaul University Students: 'Gender is a Universe'

ashley.rae | February 8, 2016

Some of you may have heard the popular Progressive phrase that “gender is a spectrum,” but according to students at DePaul University, gender is an entire universe.

An advertisement for DePaul’s “Gender?” discussion group asks participants to “explore” the entire gender “universe.”

According to the advertisement, “‘Gender?’ is a discussion group for DePaul students who would like to discuss gender and build community in a trans, non-binary, genderqueer, and GNC [gender non-conforming] focused space. If you’re interested feel free to join us at any point during any of our meetings!’

A Facebook post by the school’s Office of LGBTQA Student Services on Aug. 25 described “Gender ?” as a group for people who are “interested in exploring gender and gender identity” while connecting with “other trans, genderqueer, gender non-conforming or questioning students” yet while somehow still “forming new opinions.”

The group is allegedly a collaboration between the school’s LGBTQA Student Services and the student group “Trans*(formation).”

Even though the point of “Gender?” is allegedly to form “new opinions,” “Trans*(formation)” is a group for “gender nonconforming students and allies [who are] working to educate our community about gender variance.”

LGBTQA Student Services is a division of the school’s Division of Student Affairs.

“Gender ?” meetings take place on Mondays from 6-7:30 p.m.
