Democratic Sen. Chris Murphy Admits No FBI Investigation Will Change His Mind on Kavanaugh

Democratic Sen. Chris Murphy admitted Friday that while he still thinks the FBI should investigate Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh over accusations that he sexually abused women in high school, an FBI investigation – no matter the outcome – won’t actually change his mind about voting "no."

“Yes, of course there should be an FBI investigation,” Murphy tweeted Friday. “But whatever they find doesn’t change the fact that Kavanaugh, especially after his performance yesterday, is the most dangerous Supreme Court pick of our lifetime."

During a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing Thursday, a clearly upset Kavanaugh emphatically denied that he sexually assaulted Dr. Christine Blasey Ford at a house party back in high school in 1982, or that he'd ever sexually abused any woman ever.

Democrats have for days called for an FBI investigation into Ford’s allegations, despite the fact that Kavanaugh as already passed six FBI background checks in the last 25 years during his time as a rising judge.

Arizona Republican Sen. Jeff Flake voted “yes” to move Kavanaugh’s confirmation from the committee to the Senate floor Friday, but has called for an FBI investigation into the accusations as a condition of his vote to confirm Kavanaugh next week. Flake said he hopes an investigation will help assuage Democrats who he says have been "justifiably uncomfortable” moving forward with Kavanaugh’s confirmation.

But, as Murphy’s own statement clearly shows, it appears that any investigation -- no matter how it ends -- will change much for Democrats.
