Dem. Candidate for Arizona Gov. Supports Minors Getting Abortions Without Parental Consent

David Garcia, who is running for the Democratic bid in the gubernatorial race in Arizona, proclaimed that, while he thinks it is a “tough” situation, he believes that minors should be able to have access to an abortion procedure without the consent of their parent.

During an event called "Women with David Garcia," Garcia was asked by an audience member "Do you think that someone who is a minor, I have two little sisters who are like 13 and 14, do you think that a minor should be allowed to have an abortion without parental consent?"

"In that very difficult crossroads, in that place where there are very few places to turn, I want them to have the ability to go to a professional, to go to a counselor to make that decision with their assistance," Garcia responded. "So, yes, I do."

Garcia claims to be a “champion of women” and boasts his endorsement from Planned Parenthood. He describes himself as an “advocate for healthy families and will advance policies that support Arizona’s women, families and, ultimately the state as a whole.”

While championing women and he ironically wants to “protect children” saying that “Arizona consistently ranks as one of the worst places in the United States to be a kid.”

In order to help minors have access to abortions without parental consent, Garcia would have to repeal Parental Consent (A.R.S. § 36-2152) which “Requires parental consent for minors seeking abortions but allows for judicial bypass.”

In addition to Planned Parenthood, Garcia has an endorsement from Arizona National Organization for Women, a group aiming to “advance the equal status of women and girls in all aspects of their lives” including “access to safe and legal abortion.”

Another pro-choice organization, NARAL Pro-Choice Arizona, has endorsed Garcia saying “With reproductive rights more vulnerable today than they have been in decades, David Garcia is the leader that Arizona needs.”

Garcia is currently a professor of research and policy at Mary Lou Fulton Teachers College at Arizona State University and has a long history of working in academia as a researcher and fellow.
