“The Texas Supreme Court has now ordered the runaway ring leader of the derelict Democrats to respond to my lawsuit by Friday,” Republican Texas Governor Greg Abbott announced Tuesday, providing an update on his effort to remove a Texas House member who fled the state.
More than fifty Texas House Democrats, among them Rep. Gene Wu, left the state Sunday in order to deny Republicans the quorum needed to conduct legislative business and approve Congressional map redistricting.
On Tuesday, Gov. Greg Abbott filed an emergency petition in the Supreme Court of Texas seeking to remove “ring leader” Wu from office.
In his petition, Gov. Abbott states three reasons for removing Rep. Wu:
- “First, Wu planned not to show up for work, for the specific purpose of abdicating his duties and thwarting the chamber’s business.”
- “Second, Wu has indicated his absence from the State is indefinite.”
- “Third, Wu has openly solicited and accepted funds and other consideration for the violation of his legislative duties.”
A “member of the Legislature deliberately and indefinitely departing from his district for the express purpose of sabotaging the Legislature’s operations” has willfully vacated his office, the lawsuit contends.
Later on Tuesday, the Texas Supreme Court informed Wu and his attorneys that they have until 5:00 p.m. Friday, August 8, 2025 to respond to Gov. Abbott’s request that Wu be ousted from office.
