Three out of every four suspects arrested in Midtown Manhattan are migrants – and NYPD law enforcement officers say federal and local government immigration policies are the reason why.
Fully 75% of arrests in Midtown Manhattan, and more than 60% of arrests in Queens, are migrants suspected of crimes like assault, robbery and domestic violence, police sources told The New York Post in recent interviews.
New York City officials estimate that more than 200,000 migrants have come to the city since 2022.
Even with illegal immigrants surging into New York City, migrants account for a far smaller percent of the population than they do of arrests, Hot Air reports:
“The one complicating factor that nobody in the municipal government seems to want to talk about is the fact that a vastly overrepresented amount of the criminals showing up in Manhattan's courts each week are illegal migrants. While vast numbers of them have been arriving in Gotham, they still make up considerably less than 10% of the city's total population.”
And, while migrant crime may be escalating, overall crime in the city is down, a NYPD spokesperson told The Post.
What’s more, “Most of the people we arrest are professionals — these aren’t their first crimes,” one officer said.
Federal and local government immigration policies are responsible for the extraordinarily high level of migrant crime, NYPD law enforcement officials say – citing the Biden-Harris Administration’s open border policies and the city’s illegal alien sanctuary status as examples.
Indeed, U.S. border agents have encountered more than seven million illegal immigrants during the Biden-Harris administration, in addition to the hundreds of thousands of foreign nationals ushered in by programs the administration has created.
“A large number of these migrants have zeroed in on New York City, with city officials saying over 200,000 migrants have arrived since 2022 — costing the city roughly $1.5 billion in 2023 alone,” The Daily Caller explains.
“Crime would be down significantly if there was a wall and we could account for everyone who comes into the country,” a source told The Post, adding that the Biden-Harris administration needs to begin vigorously deporting immigrants who commit crimes.
The current justice system, especially courts that refuse to hold immigrants accountable, is sending a dangerous message to criminals, NYC Police Benevolent Association President Patrick Hendry told The Post:
“Word has gotten out that you can come to New York to commit crimes and attack police officers and be out the next day. That message needs to change in order to keep dangerous people off our city streets.”
Due to New York City’s policy of providing sanctuary to illegal aliens, police aren’t allowed to ask the immigration status of crime suspects, witnesses and victims. NYC police are also prohibited from working with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to curb illegal immigration.
And finally, efforts to accurately estimate the number of migrant crimes are largely thwarted by the New York Police Department’s failure to collect data on the immigration status of suspects and arrestees.
