Democrat Americans’ support of requiring voters to provide photo identification has jumped over the last two years, results of a new Gallup poll reveal.
In a national survey conducted October 1-12 of this year, Gallup asked U.S. adults whether they support “Requiring all voters to provide photo identification at their voting place in order to vote.”
More than four in five (84%) of U.S. adults said they do support a photo ID requirement.
“Republicans are more supportive of policies that would help ensure ineligible people don’t vote,” Gallup notes. While virtually all Republican adults (98%) said they back the requirement, significantly fewer Democrats (67%) agreed.
However, support among Democrats for requiring photo identification has jumped from about half (53%) in 2022 to two-thirds (67%) today. This 14-point jump suggests that Democrat Americans are becoming more concerned about ensuring election integrity.
Among both Whites (86%) and Non-Whites (80%), at least four in five support requiring voters to show photo identification.
In a separate question, Gallup asked whether first-time voters should be required to provide proof of citizenship. Here, too, more than fourth-fifths (83%) of U.S. adults said they do support the voter requirement.
And, again, almost every Republican (96%) voiced support for requiring voters to show proof of citizenship in order to vote, compared to just two-thirds of Democrats (66%).
Non-Whites (76%) were somewhat less prone than Whites (87%) to support the proof-of-citizenship requirement, though strong majorities of both groups did.
A 60% majority of U.S. adults said they’re in favor of automatically registering voters when they “do business with the DMV or other state agencies.”
Democrats (79%) and Non-Whites (69%) are more enthusiastic than Republicans (55%) about the idea of automatically registering people to vote.
Independents’ views on all three policies mirror the overall national averages, Gallup reports.
