Belief that the country is heading in the right direction is on the verge of hitting the highest level in 16 years, according to the latest Real Clear Politics (RCP) weekly average of seven major national polls.

“Kudos to President Trump and his team for muscling through near universally negative media coverage to post this ‘right direction’ spike,” incoming Media Research Center President David Bozell wrote Friday in a social media post reacting to the news.

Bozell was responding to a post by Rasmussen Reports Pollster Mark Mitchell’s observation that “It isn't just our numbers. @RCPolitics Right Direction number is 1 point away from being better than at any point in their last 16 years.”

Indeed, according to the RCP average, the 43.6% of Americans who now report that the country is heading in “the right direction” isn’t just up from the previous week’s level of 43.0% - it’s the highest since it hit 45.0% on June 6 of 2009.

Of the seven polls factored into the RCP average released Monday, Emerson had the highest “right direction” percent (48%), followed by Rasmussen’s 47% result. But, Rasmussen had the highest “Right Direction/“Wrong Direction” net: a 47%-47% tie. Taken together, RCP’s average shows a -7.3% net for the seven polls combined.
