Kim Davis, the Kentucky county clerk known most notably for being jailed after refusing to issue a marriage license to a gay man, will now have to defend her county clerk position against him in a 2018 election.

The Lexington Herald Leader reported that her opponent, David Ermold, is running “ to restore professional leadership, fairness, and responsibility to the clerk’s office.” Ermold explained:

I am running to restore the confidence of the people in our clerk’s office and because I believe that the leaders of our community should act with integrity and fairness, and they should put the needs of their constituents first.

Davis, whose temporary stint in jail back in 2015 sparked a nationwide debate over religious freedom for public officials, claimed she was standing up for her religious beliefs in refusing to issue marriage licenses to gay people and was jailed for doing so. Her opponent obviously disagreed, and now wants to take her job for it.
