Sen. Mitch McConnell's (R-Ky.) and former President Donald Trump’s relationship has deteriorated as of late, probably because of the former's accusation that the latter was responsible for the January 6th Capitol Hill riots. So it’s surprising that the Kentucky Senator is suddenly backing him again.
The Senate Minority Leader told Fox News that he would "absolutely" support Trump if he were to become the 2024 GOP presidential nominee, according to the Washington Examiner.
"I think the Biden administration is making it easy for us to get together," McConnell told Fox News anchor Bret Baier. "I think we've unified in opposition to this new administration's extremely progressive approach."
This is a strange statement to make, considering that Trump recently lambasted McConnell in a statement released by Save America PAC.
"Mitch is a dour, sullen, and unsmiling political hack," Trump said, "and if Republican senators are going to stay with him, they will not win again."

Trump’s statement was released some time after McConnell blamed the former president for the Capitol Hill riots that occurred on January 6th.
"President Trump is practically and morally responsible for provoking the events of the day. No question about it," McConnell had said. Yet he declined to vote in favor of a conviction of Trump. Those actions make his current announcement on supporting the former president even more puzzling.
As of now, it’s unclear why McConnell would first bash Trump then declare his support for him.
