Folks who populate the trenches of political-philosophical-economic education sometimes search for allies, comrades who might also be fighting the good fight. We find each other here at MRCTV, and elsewhere -- locally, in families, at churches, and online. And sometimes, we get the added pleasure of seeing a media figure whose work we’ve enjoyed stand up for principles, despite the forces of leftism that might be arrayed against him.

Actor/writer/comedian Rob Schneider is one such man.

On October 17, Schneider -- who recently and wisely chose to leave CA -- jumped back into the mosh-pit of California political disputation. And he added to his list of insightful and witty Tweets a powerful slam of Governor Gavin Newsom’s latest tax-funded, authoritarian, fearmongering hybrid of mandates that the government sometimes also labels “guidelines.”

Wrote Schneider:

Dear Emperor @GavinNewsom

During our allotted 3 family limit this Thanksgiving, if my Aunt comes over, can I throw her a slice of turkey from the window? We promise NOT to sing... we will all just whisper, ‘PLEASE RECALL DIPSHIT GAVIN NEWSON!’

And the imagined scenarios to which Schneider refers is all based on real edicts from the Democrat Governor’s Administration.

In its October 9, 2020 “guidance” document, which, as anyone can see, includes “Mandatory Requirements for All Gatherings”, the California Department of Public Health warned residents that they’d better abide by their Soviet-style orders, just in time for Thanksgiving…

All persons planning to host or participate in a private gathering, as defined above, must comply with the following requirements.

And those include (in part):

  • All gatherings must be held outside.
  • Gatherings that include more than 3 households are prohibited.
  • When gathering, face coverings must be worn in accordance with the CDPH Guidance on the Use of Face Coverings (PDF), unless an exemption is applicable.
  • People at gatherings may remove their face coverings briefly to eat or drink as long as they stay at least 6 feet away from everyone outside their own household, and put their face covering back on as soon as they are done with the activity.
  • Seating must provide at least 6 feet of distance (in all directions—front-to-back and side-to-side) between different households.
  • … singing, chanting, and shouting are strongly discouraged, but if they occur, the following rules and recommendations apply:
  • All people who are singing or chanting should wear a face covering at all times while singing or chanting, including anyone who is leading a song or chant. Because these activities pose a very high risk of COVID-19 transmission, face coverings are essential to reduce the spread of respiratory droplets and fine aerosols;
  • People who are singing, shouting, chanting, or exercising are strongly encouraged to maintain physical distancing beyond 6 feet to further reduce risk.
  • People who are singing or chanting are strongly encouraged to do so quietly (at or below the volume of a normal speaking voice).

So, Rob Schneider’s neighborly message to the aggressive bully Newsom is spot-on, and it highlights the underlying lesson that Newsom and many others might want to learn – that being the difference between government/state action and freedom.

When people are free, they are free to exercise their wills in peaceful ways, which means that they can choose to voluntarily associate with others who make similar choices using their free wills. As a result, any private property allows its owners to choose to welcome people, just as a person can choose to enter or not. It is only on state-run, government-owned, tax-funded property where all of us are forced together through the cash taken from us, where people think they have a right to gather because they already had their cash taken from them to run it.

As I often mention, public systems create what is called “The Tragedy of The Commons,” where everyone believes he or she should be able to be in a place, and the state begins issuing edicts and restrictions, because not everyone can use that place at the same time for all the varied purposes desired.

And don’t let anyone deceive you. Despite an erroneous 1946 Supreme Court ruling in the case called “Marsh v Alabama”, in which the majority found that a stretch of land owned by a private company was, somehow, magically, “public” property, public property actually is only that on which tax money is spent. Anything not run by government is PRIVATE – period.

Over the decades – over generations -- Americans have adopted normalcy bias in this twisted regard, forgetting the profound difference between a private place that is open to business but REMAINS PRIVATE, and a public place that is run through the forced expropriation of tax money and which prevents people deciding for themselves how to best spend that money.

A rock club or comedy club doesn’t force someone to enter and pay for the show.

Government is what uses force, and, as a result, and by definition, blocks new opportunities to appear, blocks the revelation of real preferences about safety and freedom.

And Rob Schneider is very aware of this stark and important difference. Not only has he skewered Governor Newsom, he has referred people to the work of legendary free market titan Ludwig von Mises and to contemporary free market economist Tom Woods, and many more.

He has worked to expose cronyism and promote market principles, and he’s done so with brains and heart.

It’s a pleasure to see a man employ his wit to back peace and liberty.

Wouldn’t it be nice if Gavin Newsom had a change of heart, and started to listen to folks like Mr. Schneider?

If he did, perhaps gentlemen such as Mr. Schneider would not have felt the need to flee California for a freer environment. Now, Rob and his family are in Arizona, but, thankfully, he’s not given up defending freedom.
