Students at Virginia's Lynchburg College received a “safety announcement” Monday night warning them about clown sightings on campus.

The email obtained by MRCTV reads:

Campus Safety and Security has received multiple reports of individuals dressed as clowns on campus in the vicinity of portions of Southside, the Deli, and behind the west side residence halls. If you see any individuals dressed as clowns on, our around campus please do not engage.

The email includes the phone number to call Campus Safety and Security if individuals have any information about the clowns.

Reports of clown sightings have become popular across the country, including on college campuses. The University of Connecticut, the University of New Hampshire, the State University of New York at Cortland, and Merrimack College all also reportedly experienced allegedly clown sightings on campus on Oct. 3.

Many of the reported clown sightings, however, have turned out to be hoaxes. For instance, the clown sighting at Merrimack College, where students were forced to evacuate their dorms after the report on an armed clown on campus was reportedly part of a Twitter hoax.

The clown sightings appear to have increased after a photo of a creepy clown recirculated on social media.
