The Women's Lacrosse team at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) has been labelled “racist” and ignorant by the school’s Black Student Union (BSU) for “liking” a tweet by President Trump, Campus Reform reports.
“Courageous Patriots have fought and died for our great American Flag—we MUST honor and respect it! MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!” reads the Trump tweet.
BSU saw that the Women’s Lacrosse team’s Twitter account “liked” the tweet and attempted to publicly shame them by posting a screenshot of the "like" onto Twitter with the description, “You’re welcome to come to a meeting and voice your Ignorance and blatant disregard for students within your campus let alone your own team.”
BSU went on, “So in liking that tweet you are 1- saying that your black counterparts don't deserve to protest… As well as, 2- saying the black people on your team don't care about racial injustice.”
“If you are going to be racist please come correct,” they said.
Kia Reinhardt, a black student and member of the UMBC Women’s Lacrosse team, responded to BSU's tweet, telling them they are “blowing this out of proportion.”
“Cool out,” Reinhardt said. “What's funny ? The fact that you guys are all blowing this out of proportion ? cool out w that.”
A woman defending BSU replied to Reinhardt, “[D]on't crap on people's feelings towards something racial just to protect your organization.”
Another tweeted, “Quick PSA: If you defending yo racist ass teammates you racist too.”
That tweet has since been made "unavailable."
One person defended the Women's Lacrosse team, saying, "Standing with the POTUS does NOT make you a racist, I for one am looking forward to tax reform and pro life laws."
BSU’s tweet got 138 likes and 95 shares.
The UMBC Women’s Lacrosse Twitter account, “@umbcwlacrosse,” has since been deleted.
