Less than a day after Twitter added a brand new “fact-check” feature to President Donald Trump’s tweets for the first time, the president fired back saying that if social media continues to censor conservatives, the government may “strongly regulate, or close them down.”

“Republicans feel that Social Media Platforms totally silence conservatives [sic] voices. We will strongly regulate, or close them down, before we can ever allow this to happen,” Trump tweeted Wednesday morning.

“We saw what they attempted to do, and failed, in 2016,” he continued. “We can’t let a more sophisticated version of that happen again. Just like we can’t let large scale Mail-In Ballots take root in our Country. It would be a free for all on cheating, forgery and the theft of Ballots. Whoever cheated the most would win. Likewise, Social Media. Clean up your act, NOW!!!!”

Trump's tweet comes hours after Twitter announced their new “fact-check” feature, which they’ve added to any tweets of Trump’s that they allege misconstrue or contradict the “facts.” The social media platform, which has previously said they won’t ban Trump from Twitter as a matter of public interest, added the feature after Trump tweeted a series of baseless claims that former US Rep.-turned-MSNBC host Joe Scarborough was involved in the death of an intern decades ago.

Twitter has now added an icon to Trump's tweets where users can click to "get the facts." That feature has been added to multiple tweets from the president, including allegations that a mail-in voting system, which Democrats have pushed for citing the coronavirus outbreak, would be open to rampant abuse and fraud.
