In an interview with CNN following the deadly truck attack in Nice, presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton said that the incident serves as a reminder that the U.S. has to "strengthen our alliances" and "not undermine them."

“I am sick and horrored about what’s happened to the French people,” said Clinton. “It reminds us very vividly and tragically that we have to stand with our allies and not abandon them. We need to strengthen our alliances including with NATO, not undermine them.”

Her reference to NATO is a likely dig at Donald Trump who has criticized the alliance as “obsolete” and in desperate need of reform.

In an interview with Fox News’ Bill O’Reilly Thursday night, Trump said that he would use NATO to destroy ISIS.

“We should use NATO for a purpose,” said Trump. “I mean, we’re been spending a fortune on NATO. We have countries in NATO that don’t make a fair contribution… We should at least get something out of it and getting rid of ISIS, getting rid of this cancer that we’re watching all over the world, that certainly would be a good thing ... getting NATO involved.”

He added that, if he were president, he would ask Congress for a declaration of war.

The attack in Nice marks the third major terror attack on France in the last year and a half.

French President Francois Hollande issued a statement on Thursday denouncing the attack as an act of terror.

He vowed to strengthen his nation’s role in the fight against Islamic extremism in Iraq and Syria.
