On April 4 at Portland State University, a citizen journalist was kicked out of an event during “Islam Awareness Week” for having a flip cam and recording against the wishes of Imam Mikal Shabazz, the man leading the event. Shabazz took offense of the man recording his lecture despite it being a publicized, open event and ordered the man to be expelled. The event was being held by the Muslim Student Association.

The account where the the citizen journalists video is posted reads:

Portland State University, “Islam Awareness Week”, April 4th-8th, 2011. Citizen journalist takes video camera into public event in which the public was invited to at a publicly funded university. Seconds after calling for “open and sound testimony without shame, hesitation, or reservation”, Imam Mikal Shabazz takes offense to his lecture being recorded and orders event organizers to expel the cameraman. Event organizers then follow the journalist down a hallway and continue to harass him as he tries to leave. What are they trying to hide?
