Christian University Discourages Students From Applying To Work At Hooters

A Christian university in Texas is discouraging its students from working at the new Hooters store opening up near campus because of the way the chain depicts women.

According to a report by KTXS (which was since removed, but an archive is available here), Abilene Christian University issued a statement claiming the Hooters may contradict the school’s values. A spokesperson allegedly told the station, “we have asked students to consider both what Hooters represents and whether that is something they really want to support in terms of both their faith and the value this business model places on women.”

The student handbook reportedly instructs “students to make decisions that ultimately glorify God.”

Vice president for Student Life Chris Riley told the student newspaper, “As Jesus followers, I think we have to consider what Hooters reflects about how we value others […] and whether we see them as more than ‘products’ to be sold.”

The required qualifications for the “Hooters Girl” position at the Abilene location include knowing how to apply makeup, knowing “glamorous hair styling,” and keeping an “attractive & fit image”:

  • Knowledgeable of Glamorous Hair Styling
  • Knowledge of Make-up Application
  • Customer Service Skills
  • Basic Mathematical Computations Skills
  • Ability to Promote Brand Integrity
  • Ability to Engage Guests in Products and Menu
  • Ability to Maintain Professionalism at all times
  • Ability to Communicate clearly
  • Ability to Work Well with Others
  • Ability to Multi-Task
  • Ability to Maintain Attractive & Fit Image
  • Must be 18 years of age *in some areas age requirements may be 21 years of age.”

Other positions, such as the staff position, do not place an emphasis on appearance.

Hooters told KTXS they are “committed to supporting the communities in which we operate and prioritizes a welcoming environment for all of our employees and guests.”

Riley and Mark Lewis, who serves as the dean of students, are reportedly mulling over potential consequences for students who choose to go to Hooters.
