Think the United States "oppresses" people who take a knee during the national anthem? It turns out boycotting the NFL is nothing compared to what China wants to do.

China's parliamentary body is considering increasing the penalties for those who disrespect the country's national anthem to a three-year jail sentence, according to state news agency "Xinhua."

The country already imposes a punishment of 15 days in police detention for those who mock the "March of the Volunteers," a law that was passed in September, according to Business Insider. This law covers the territories of Hong Kong and Macau.

Now, the parliament is thinking about amending China's Criminal Law code to include criminal penalties for disrespecting the national anthem, according to the Xinhua report.

At this point in the process, a draft amendment has been submitted for deliberation by the parliament's standing committee, which states, "Violators in this regard may face punishments of up to three years of imprisonment."

Although the state has often passed ordinances that limit the freedoms of its people, it is not clear whether this would pass.
