It used to be that a “down” week for weekend shootings in Chicago would be somewhere around one or two killed with another 10 to 15 wounded. It’s unfortunate for one person to be shot. But nowadays, a “down” weekend is more along the lines of the numbers we got this past weekend.

At least seven people were murdered and another 39 were wounded in weekend shootings across the Chicagoland area. This is down from the previous weekend’s totals, but not by much, as that weekend saw five killed and another 47 wounded.

I guess this is just how it is in Mayor Lori Lightfoot’s Chicago.

Here are the names and ages of those who lost their lives over the weekend, according to the Chicago Sun-Times (Note: One of the victims fatally shot wasn’t listed):

Unidentified Female, 62

Unidentified Male, 34

Israel L. Luna, 19

Sergio Ochoa, 30

Unidentified Male, 39

Marcus Edwards, 29

As for the year-to-date totals for Chicago weekend shootings, 211 people have been murdered and another 1,189 have been wounded in Chicago in 2021. The Chicago Tribune, which keeps a tracker of all shooting victims in Chicago, doesn’t appear to be paying attention as they still haven’t updated their numbers in over a month. But, they reported that — as of July 7 — 2,021 people have been shot in Chicago this year. That number is 164 more than at the same point in 2020, which saw the second most shooting victims in the last 10 years of tracking data.
