Report: Trump Will Meet With British PM About Charlie Gard

Lianne Hikind | July 6, 2017

Charlie Gard's parents are still fighting to save his life, and the President of the United States may be giving them another reason to hope.

The Sun reported on Wednesday that President Trump requested a meeting with British Prime Minister Theresa May after her government rejected outside offers to treat the 11-month old boy, who's been deemed terminally ill due to a rare genetic condition that causes severe brain damage. Even offers of help from the Vatican have been denied.

According to the Daily Mail, there is no confirmation from British officials as to the nature of the meeting, but said that officials are "preparing a detailed briefing for [May] on Charlie’s case in anticipation of likely questions from Trump."

As previously reported, Charlie's parents have raised more than $1.3 million to bring their son to the United States to undergo an experimental treatment. Great Ormond Street Hospital, where Charlie is being treated, has refused to allow Charlie to be taken out of the hospital.

Early last week, the European Court of Human Rights determined that Charlie should be taken off life support against his parents' wishes and allowed to "die with dignity."

Charlie's parents have persisted, though, and President Trump's Monday tweet in support of Charlie seems to have bolstered their strength. In the post, the president claimed the United States would be "delighted" to help Charlie in any way possible.

Andy Gard, Charlie's father, wrote a post on Facebook calling out UK officials who refuse to allow the 11-month old's parents to seek alternative treatment.

Hopefully, more good news is forthcoming for Charlie Gard.
