A transgender non-binary California high school teacher who championed “transition closets” for schools is part of the anti-Catholic drag group Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, according to the teacher’s social media.

Thomas Martin-Edwards is a Spanish teacher at Fremont High School in Oakland, CA, and has an active TikTok account where he posts videos about his “gender non-conforming” lifestyle and his efforts to spread “gender support plans” to schools across the country. Martin-Edwards praised his school on TikTok for being “explicitly trans-affirming” and having a stocked “transition closet” that supplies students with clothing and shapewear (including chest binders) so students can come to school and switch their clothes for outfits that match their self-identified gender.

Martin-Edwards is a vocal proponent of transition closets and similar programs for students. In an article for The Post Millennial, he compared the switch to Clark Kent changing into Superman in a phone booth because “when Clark Kent goes into the phone booth, he  transforms into Superman, who is really just who he truly is.”

“The goal of the transition closet is for our students to wear the clothes that their parents approve of, come to school and then swap out into the clothes that fit who they truly are,” Martin-Edwards said.

Martin-Edwards has since helped implement similar programs at other schools across the region and in other states.

Martin-Edwards has also used social media to discuss his membership with the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence (SPI)—a drag group that has been criticized as being anti-Catholic for its mockery of nuns and other elements of the religion. SPI found itself in the spotlight recently after the LA Dodgers made the controversial decision to honor the group at a Pride event in June, sparking widespread backlash.

As part of the process to join the group (which can take a minimum of one and a half to two years), prospective members must complete a “novice project.” In one video, Martin-Edwards described his project, in which he took “trans and non binary and gender exploratory youth” on an all-expenses paid shopping trip to get clothes to match their self-identified genders. He called the event “Eva’s Shop Til You Death Drop,” a reference to his drag stage name, Sister Eva Lynn Goode.

“They met with drag kings, drag queens and a few drag quings and went on a shopping trip out of the closet to buy all of their back to school clothes so that they could have clothes that fit the gender that they wish to express,” Martin-Edwards said in the video. “And all of this was with parent consent.”

Martin-Edwards continues to be a vocal proponent of programs that support youth that self- identify as a gender other than the one they were assigned at birth. One of his recent videos was a message to Zooey Zephyr, a transgender Montana State Representative, requesting the chance to come to Montana and implement similar programs in schools there.
