National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB) President and CEO Juanita Duggan met with President Donald J. Trump in a small meeting at the White House on Wednesday to explain why small business owners are enthusiastically supportive of the nomination of Judge Neil Gorsuch for the United States Supreme Court.
“I’m very grateful to the President for inviting me to the White House to represent the interests of American small business owners,” said Duggan on behalf of NFIB’s 325,000 small businesses.
“Our members regard this nomination as a very important battle in the fight against excessive and unlawful regulation.”
Duggan was at the White House Tuesday when President Trump announced Gorsuch as his nominee for the Court. After researching his record on the 10th Circuit Court of Appeals, NFIB came out last night as the only major business group to support his nomination strongly.
“Judge Gorsuch has been very firm on confining regulatory agencies to the text of the law,” she said. “Regulatory agencies often try to expand their own authority by stretching the law beyond what Congress wrote. We are currently fighting against multiple regulatory agencies that did exactly that.”
“Bureaucratic overreach is killing small business,” she said. “That’s the message that I took to the White House this morning. Our members have a very big stake in supporting the nomination of Judge Neil Gorsuch to the Supreme Court.”
Upon hearing of the nomination by Pres. Trump, NFIB issued a statement backing Gorsuch and praising the judge for challenging the threat of regulatory overreach:
“Judge Gorsuch’s willingness to challenge the Chevron Doctrine, under which the courts often defer to regulatory agencies on the interpretation of statutes, is a very positive signal to small businesses.
“Regulatory overreach is a serious threat and the basis on which NFIB is actively fighting multiple agencies in federal court.”
In the 2016 NFIB Problems and Priorities report, small business owners ranked “Unreasonable Government Regulations” as their second most serious problem from a list of 75 issues – topped only by “Cost of Health Insurance.
NFIB is challenging in court several major regulations, including the EPA Waters of the U.S. Rule, the Department of Labor Overtime Rule, and the EPA Clean Power Plan. Each of the respective agencies overstepped their statutory authority, said Duggan, in ways that will be devastating to small business owners.
